David Sedaris, the acclaimed author of such bestsellers as ‘Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim’, and ‘Me Talk Pretty One Day’, visits The Hanover Theatre, this Thursday, September 30, 2010.
The first time I met David Sedaris was at a book signing following a reading he gave at UMASS in Amherst. As my friend and I neared the signing table, we witnessed Sedaris take a book from a fan and ask “You’re a Virgo, aren’t you?” When the fan replied that they were a Pieces, he retorted “Yeah…I don’t know anything about astrology.”
When we approached the table, Sedaris filled up the brief encounter with small talk about not being able to write poetry, and whether my friend wore sweatpants to work. Much like his writing, it was the mundane made hilarious. The inscription he wrote in my book read “Your story has touched my heart” and in my friend’s copy he simply drew a turtle.
David Sedaris is back on tour now to promote his new book, Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary, a collection of animal fables, illustrated by Ian Falconer, which hits stores today. While a departure from his usual humorous essays, those who have heard Sedaris’ animal tales at prior readings know that they contain his usual keen acerbic wit.
This week, just two days after the books release, Sedaris is returning to Massachusetts for “An Evening with David Sedaris,” at Worcester’s Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts. The show begins at 7:30PM and tickets can be purchased here.
