Kane’s Donuts, Saugus, Massachusetts

“Making the World’s Best Donuts Since 1955”

By Mark B. Oliver | May 28, 2012

Kane's Donuts

In 1955, Bob and June Kane opened a small unobtrusive donut store on Lincoln Avenue in Saugus, Massachusetts and so began a local institution.

Each Donut is Freshly Made on the Premises Daily

Freshly baked each morning using a family recipe, the couple had an instant success on their hands.   Opening at an unenviable 5AM every morning, they diligently served their loyal customers for 33 years.

Upon retiring in 1988, the Kanes’ sold the store to Peter and Kay Delios, who added additional donut recipes in addition to the tried and true donuts that have been savored all those years.

They too opened at 5AM, but frequently found that the local lobster fisherman would knock politely on the door before opening time to see if any freshly baked donuts were ready that they could take with them to sea.

Before long, the store was opening at 3.30AM to serve this dedicated band of sailors and the store has opened for them every day ever since.

Peter and Kay also stayed with the store until they retired which is now run by their five children; Stephen, Peter, Maria, Catherine and Paul.   Despite being retired Kay is in nearly every day to “keep an eye on the place” and lend a helping hand.

Kane’s Donuts is just ¼ mile from the ocean, and has become a destination venue for both locals and tourists alike.   Despite the existence of no less than 16 Dunkin' Donuts ion the area, Kane’s not only survives but flourishes.   Paul Delios explained their simple secret to success.

Warm Donuts - What could be better?

“All of our donuts are homemade on the premises daily using the finest local ingredients.   We buy our flour from the nearest mill and our dairy from the nearby farms.   You really can taste the difference over mass produced donuts and there is certainly an appeal of our ‘Mom and Pop’ style.”

Not only do the donuts speak for themselves but the experts agree; Kanes’ was mentioned in the March 2010 issue of Bon Appétit for the best donut in America and was cited by MSN as one of the Top 10 Donut Shops in the US.

A recent refurbishment has more than doubled the interior seating space and has made wheelchair access possible for the first time.

Whether you are an infrequent donut eater or a connoisseur, Kane’s Donuts is the place for you.   What are you waiting for?
