Turner Publishing’s popular series "Historic Photos of..." continues with two hundred stunning photos of Maine.

Compiled and written by Frances Pollitt, who works at the Maine Historical Society for Maine Memory Network, Frances clearly knows her subject matter extremely well.

Her selection of photos is exemplary and the range and quality impressive.   The collection is divided into four categories, “Land and People” (1865 - 1899), “The Maine Attraction” (1900-1919), “Between the Wars” (1920-1939) and “Living in Maine” (1940 - 1980).

Some photos are whimsical (page VI, a racecar driver confronts a snowdrift in his runabout, 1907), others heartbreaking (page 5, the devastation following Portland’s Great Fire of 1866), and many more simply astonishing (page 29, the banking of Annie C. Maquire, Christmas Eve 1886).

The photos are accompanied by informative text from Frances that help the reader identify exactly what can be seen.

The variety of the photos, together with the book’s scope make this an invaluable addition for everyone who lives in Maine or is interested in history.
