Theater Preview - The Brookfield Theatre for the Arts, Brookfield, Connecticut

By Mark B. Oliver | June 24, 2011

The Brookfield Theatre for the Arts (TBTA), is a small local theatre that consistently punches above its weight.

Housed in an unassuming stone cottage that was built in 1907, the theatre has recently performed a string of hits from The Laramie Project andOnce Upon This Island, to The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

The TBTA has now turned its attention to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s first musical to be presented to the public - Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which is based upon the “coat of many colors” from the Book of Genesis.

Joseph, whose lyrics are by Lloyd-Webber’s long term collaborator Tim Rice, was originally presented back in March 1968 as a short fifteen minute cantata at the Colet Court School in London.

Lloyd-Webber’s father, who was also a composer, believed that Joseph showed great promise.   He arranged for an expanded version to be performed at the school that May, and a third performance, now lasting some thirty-five minutes, at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, followed in the November to positive reviews.

Following the success of their next musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph was marketed as a “follow-up” to critical and commercial acclaim.   It was expanded further including a new opening piece Jacob’s Journey, which contained much spoken dialogue.

Its modern format, which dispensed with Jacob’s Journey to allow a sung-through score debuted in the mid-seventies and has since been produced thousands of times across around the world.

Under the sure-handed direction of Erik Tonner, and with Joanne F. Archibald as musical director, and choreography by Caitlin D. Nolan, Joseph is likely to be yet another phenomenally successful production from TBTA.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat plays at The Brookfield Theatre for the Arts from July 1, 2011 through July 23, 2011.   And with high demand, ONE recommends buying your tickets as soon as possible.
