James Bond Goes Under the Hammer

Ian Fleming - James Bond Collection Auction, Monday, October 4, 2010

By Mark B. Oliver | September 29, 2010

At the tender age of ten, John Griswold was taken to the movies to see *Dr. No*, the very first James Bond film, and with that a lifelong passion for all things Bond was born.

Casino Royale (First Edition - 1952)

John, who grew up in Simsbury, Connecticut, started reading and collecting Ian Fleming’s Bond novels, and he has amassed fourteen first editions and that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Several other rare editions are in John’s collection; a Fleming Centenary Edition published by the Queen Anne Press (limited to an edition of 59) and a 1907 book from Fleming’s personal collection to name but two.

Movie memorabilia is also in abundance with everything from the original iconic artwork of Sean Connery from You Only Live Twice, painted by Robert McGinnis, to lobby cards, signed photographs and even Bond toys.

John went on to write Ian Fleming’s James Bond: Annotations and Chronologies for Ian Fleming’s Bond Stories where he researched every single Bond novel Fleming wrote and through tireless research identified buildings and other settings in Fleming’s extremely accurate books.   The book can be purchased from Amazon and all good retailers.

John has early-onset Alzheimer’s and he is unable to continue collecting or researching.   John’s wife Debbie reflects on what she hopes the sale will accomplish.

“As we move into the next chapter of our life, we must leave behind John’s collection.   My hope is that John’s research materials and these items from the fascinating worlds of Ian Fleming and James Bond will bring the next owner/collector the same enjoyment and satisfaction that they brought to John.”
